Water Water Everywhere … And Not a Drop to Drink

While we’re unlikely to see a hurricane here in the Phoenix area anytime soon, we do get our share of torrential rainstorms this time of year. And if you’re not prepared for it, that rain can turn your living room into a small pond! Instead of grabbing the swimsuit, grab the phone first and call Rocky Mountain Restoration. What you do in the first 48 hours after water damage occurs can have a big impact on the amount of money you spend later.

After you’ve made the call, you may want to take matters in your own hands (or worse, NOT make the call and think that you can reverse the damage yourself). Remember that water and electricity can make for a deadly combination, so be careful about cleaning up the water, especially with a Shop-Vac or standard household vacuum. It’s best to let the professionals handle it.

If you have experienced interior flooding:

  1. Call Rocky Mountain Restoration at 480-969-2860; in most emergency situations, we can make it there within hours.
  2. Turn off the breaker in the damaged area BEFORE unplugging or removing electrical appliances.
  3. Put aluminum foil under the legs of furniture. Believe it or not, this may prevent stains on carpets.
  4. Pin up drapes and furniture skirts to get them out of the water.
  5. Remove books, shoes, paper goods, plants, and anything that may stain carpets.

Water damage can spread easily, so stay out of the flooded areas as much as possible so you don’t transfer water or potentially staining materials. The water you do see is only part of the problem; much of it will be absorbed into walls, subflooring, molding, and furniture. If they are not dried quickly (preferably within that 48-hour window), they can become a source of mold, which is never much fun. So call us and let us make that disaster happily ever after!
