How to prepare your home for vacation

Whether your family is gearing up for a spring break getaway or planning a family summer vacation, there’s a lot to consider. Where to go, what to pack, and how long to stay may top the list, but what about how you’ll safeguard your home against disasters during vacations? Locking up and securing the house is a given, but avoiding a water or fire disaster during your absence might slip between the cracks. No one wants to think about this happening while we’re off making family memories, but it’s better to have a plan up front rather than to be blindsided with a phone call, or worse, discovering a disaster upon returning home.

Power Down

Not only will your energy bill be a little lower, you’ll also lessen your chances of a leak or fire. Unplug all of your appliances, electronics, and other items that don’t need to run while you’re away (of course, leave on the refrigerator and freezer if food is in there!). It’s always worth doing a walk through your home right before leaving to ensure any heat-producing items aren’t overlooked (heaters, hair tools, etc.) and all sources of water are turned off.

Check in

Depending on the duration of your trip and the distance involved, it might be worth having a friend, neighbor, or house-sitting service periodically check up on your house to safeguard your home against disasters during vacations. It will give you the peace of mind that if any surprises do come up, they can be quickly handled rather than worsening until you arrive home to find a mess. It’s also worth providing these individuals with your contact information and details for how to handle an emergency situation.

Do a Once Over

When you return home, you’ll be tired and ready for a shower and some sleep, but it’s a good idea to take a quick trip through your house and around your property to make sure a hose leak hasn’t developed while you were gone and flooded part of your backyard or worse. If something did spring up while you were away, you’ll be able to handle it and avoid further damage to your home.

Whether you’re traveling around the world this spring and summer or just planning a stay-cation across town, it’s always a good idea to safeguard your home against disasters during vacations. Don’t let your vacation go south due to a lack of pre-planning on your part. And if you do experience a fire or water issue while you’re away, be sure you have Rocky Mountain Restoration’s number programmed into your phone so you can call us to get everything back to normal as quickly as possible.
